چکیده

Abstract Neolithic occupation of the Orkney Islands, in north Scotland, probably began mid fourth millennium cal BC, culminating a range settlements, including stone-built houses, varied tombs and two noteworthy stone circles. The environmental landscape context spectacular archaeology, however, remains poorly understood. We applied Multiple Scenario Approach (MSA) to pollen records from Mainland, Orkney, order understand land cover openness across timespan 4200–2200 BC. Interpreted within framework provided by Bayesian chronological modelling, 406 radiocarbon dates archaeological contexts further 103 palaeoenvironmental samples provide basis for first detailed reconstruction spatio-temporal patterns people their environment. Major alterations Mainland took place 3400 BC (reduction woodland 20% 10%) 3200 (increase disturbed 3% 30%). dramatic increase coincided with Grooved Ware phenomenon establishment settlements at Skara Brae Ness Brodgar. upturn signal disturbance communities record may indicate an amount used as pasture. This accords record, since Orcadian economy relied heavily on cattle subsistence. By 2800 core most appear have been ending, dispersing into wider landscape, MSA modelling indicates maintenance land, indeed subsequent slight increase, implying persistence human activity elsewhere Mainland. People exhausted themselves rather than land; that its resources endured, while intensive social relationships practices peak late could not be maintained.

Screening for hypothermia in Orkney.

In a screening survey for hypothermia carried out amongst the elderly population of an island in the Orkneys, in which a 96 per cent response rate was obtained, oral temperatures were recorded using standard and low-reading thermometers. Out of 77 patients who entered the survey, only three had an oral temperature of 37 degrees C or higher. Six patients (eight per cent) had a temperature of 35 ...

Stochastic models for mainland-island metapopulations in static and dynamic landscapes.

This paper has three primary aims: to establish an effective means for modelling mainland-island metapopulations inhabiting a dynamic landscape; to investigate the effect of immigration and dynamic changes in habitat on metapopulation patch occupancy dynamics; and to illustrate the implications of our results for decision-making and population management. We first extend the mainland-island met...

Genetic analysis of multiple sclerosis in Orkney.

In a family study of all patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Orkney, the number of inbred among patients, although high for Britain, is not higher than the number among controls, and the inbreeding coefficients appear to eliminate recessive involvement of rare genes from the aetiology. The kinship coefficients show that the ancestries of patients and controls are closely enmeshed, and elim...
